Adding Rare Coins to an Investment Plan

If you are someone with a pre-existing investment plan you might already know about such things as investment-grade coins. There are gold, silver and platinum coins that deliver a needed measure of diversity to many portfolios while also providing more than simple intrinsic value.

For instance, the coins will have the added security of their face value in addition to the worth of the underlying metal. There are, however, many rare coins that offer an investor serious potential for dramatic or significant appreciation over the long-term, and these should be considered as a smart investment option too.

Currently among the options there are newly-minted gold American Eagles, but these are coins with a somewhat historic background. The Eagles were also minted in the United States from 1795 to 1933, and this means that a serious investor who wanted to add rare coins to their portfolio could opt for the older and rarer Eagles instead.

While the metal content of the coins might seem significant, this is not where their value lies. Instead, the investor will need to work with a good coin dealer who can certify the value and explain where it comes from. Using the Eagles as an example, the coin dealer would price the coins according to their condition, but also according to individual rarity. For instance, any proofs of these coins would be extremely rare and even more valuable than a coin from a rare year in good condition.

Obviously some research is going to be required in order for the investor to choose the rare coins that will increase in value and add substantial worth to the portfolio.
